Last week we were told to go out and take 6 photos from around college. These are what I came up with. I intentionally set my phones camera to take square photos, it's a ratio I enjoy and I feel more comfortable using it as opposed to the default. I prefer a viewfinder.
When I take photos, often if it's a scene like this, I like to accentuate shapes. I tried to get this as straight as possible and make it obvious that circles and rectangles are the point of the shot, not that it's a light overlooking a staircase. The contrasts between the top, middle and bottom also work well in my opinion.
This is another case of simplicity. I liked the idea of the straight lines and by shooting at an angle, I was able to keep one line straight, with the other two going off diagonally. What I also tried to do was play on symmetry, mirroring the top and bottom.
This one was dubbed a "snap" by my tutor. I like to think that I, myself can tell the difference between a snap and a photograph. For this, I didn't want to include the whole bike. I wanted to capture the dark against the light and I thought the similar tones of the wheel metal and the floor were relative to each other. True, the picture isn't THAT interesting but I still liked the outcome.
This one again, I enjoyed the idea of symmetry and the mix of contrast. The brown tone of the wood is really the only thing that makes this a colour photograph and I think if it was turned into black and white, that effect would be lost. I also like the use of shapes and the angle that the photo was taken at.
This stood out to me right away because of the colours. The floor is dark grey and the metal is a light, yet dirty white. The colour inbetween is almost a mix of the two and I thought that was quite unintentional but clever.
For this, I made Helen go and stand next to this lone cigarette. I liked the idea of someone standing out in the rain on a break, with only the legs showing and a dark cast reflection instead of a shadow.
This one was a little disappointing and I think if I could of re-shot it, I would. I really wanted to get at an angle where the lockers were perfectly centered, so that I had a mirroring of the light reflected in the metal. I do like the colours in the image and the fact that it's completely void of people. Maybe I would of liked it more had the seperation between the lockers been more a focal point, rather than the lock.
